Nuestra primera aventura fuera de Mumbai!!! Tras 6 largas horas sentados en el tren, al fin llegamos a Aurangabad, que es la ciudad mas cercana a las cuevas de Ajanta y Ellora.
Aurangabad es una ciudad sucia y sin encanto, pero el mejor sitio donde pasar la noche si quieres visitar estas increíbles cuevas protegidas por la UNESCO. Decidimos pasar la noche en uno de los hoteles de bajo presupuesto recomendados en la guia y, para nuestra sorpresa, es el primer hotel que se nos ofrece al llegar a la estacion de tren. La habitación es super basica, pero para que queremos mas, con lavabo y ducha dentro de la habitación ya nos llega. En la recepcion conocemos a Philipp, un aleman que habla perfectamente español y que viaja en solitario. Con el cenamos y compartimos taxi al dia siguiente para visitar las cuevas.
Ahora viene la parte donde cuento la parte desastrosa del viaje. 4 semanas en la India y no padecer el famoso “Delhi-belly” ya era demasiado. Pero jolines, que me pase el primer dia que salimos de excursión… pues no es muy justo que digamos. El tema es que la cena me sento fatal y me pase la noche vomitando y con una diarrea del copon. Aun asi, fui toda una valiente y me aventure a pasar el dia entero de excursión, sin comer nada durante ese dia y parte del siguiente y limitandome a beber zumo de manzana… en fin.
Las cuevas son preciosas. Vale la pena ir a las 2 y es totalmente posible visitar las 2 en el mismo dia, alquilando un taxi todo el dia (comparte gastos con otros viajeros como nosotros hicimos y te saldra mas baratillo!)
Las cuevas de Ajanta datan de los siglos II a.C. al VI d.C. y conservan las preciosas pinturas originales… lo cual supone su mayor encanto y la excusa perfecta para no perderselas. Las cuevas de Ellora son mucho mas trabajadas, y aunque tenian pinturas en su dia, estas fueron destruidas por los extremistas. En Ellora esta la construccion monolitica mas grande del mundo! Y es que lo que mas impresiona de las 2 es que todas las cuevas fueron talladas a mano de la misma roca de la montaña… simplemente un esfuerzo sobrecogedor.

Aurangabad is a dirty and charmless city, but is the best place where to spend the night if you want to visit these incredible caves protected by the UNESCO. We decide to spend the night in one of the low budget hotels suggested in our guide and, to our surprise, it is the first one offered to us when we arrive to Aurangabad train station. The room is very basic, but it has a toilet and shower inside, and we don’t need more than that for just one night. At the reception we meet Philipp, a German guy that travels solo and who speaks perfect Spanish. We have dinner with him and also decide to share the taxi ride to the caves with him the next day.
Now is when I explain the disasterous part of the trip. So I was having such a lucky run after spending 4 weeks in India without getting the famous “Delhi-belly”. Unfortunately, this luck ended the first night in Aurangabad. The dinner didn’t agree with my stomach and I spent the whole night with vomits and the runs. Nevertheless, I was brave enough to still go ahead with the all-day-long excursion, without having anything to eat and just drinking apple juice…
The caves are Amazing. It is worth it to visit both of them, and totally possible to visit them both on the same day, hiring a taxi for the whole day (split costs with other tourists like we did if you don’t want to spend so much!).
Ajanta caves date from de 2nd Century BC. to the 6th Century A.D. and their main charm is the fact that they preserve their original paintings on the walls. This is the perfect excuse to not miss them. Ellora caves are much bigger and more impressive, but they don’t have the original paintings since they were destroyed by the extemists. In Ellora you can find the biggest monolitic construction of the World! The most impressive fact about these caves is that they were carved off the rocky mountain by hand… simply an overwhelming effort.
